Texas Father Fatally Shoots Suspected Carjacker During Attempted Theft, Police Say

A Texas father fatally shot a man during an attempted carjacking involving his family of eight, including several children, according to the Garland Police Department.

Police said the incident occurred Sunday afternoon after officers responded to a multi-vehicle crash in Garland, Texas. Authorities identified the suspect as 30-year-old Jose Ramirez, a Mexican national who was reportedly attempting to take multiple vehicles by force following the collision.

Investigators said Ramirez first entered a nearby gas station parking lot, where witnesses reported he tried unsuccessfully to seize several vehicles. He later crossed the street to a convenience store parking lot and allegedly targeted a family vehicle occupied by the father and his relatives.

Surveillance footage obtained by local media reportedly shows Ramirez pulling the driver from the vehicle and attempting to take control of the car while family members rushed to escape, including a young child seen fleeing from the back seat.

According to police, Ramirez entered the driver’s seat and closed the doors before the father fired shots from the passenger side of the vehicle. Ramirez was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.

Authorities stated that the father remained at the scene, cooperated fully with investigators, and has not been charged. Police indicated the shooting appeared to be an act of self-defense.

Although investigators confirmed Ramirez was unarmed, officials noted that he was using physical force during the confrontation, and the father could not have known whether he possessed a weapon.

Garland Police Lt. Pedro Barineau said the situation unfolded rapidly and described the incident as appearing consistent with self-defense.

A nearby business employee who witnessed part of the incident told local media that Ramirez appeared disoriented and was behaving erratically before approaching the family’s vehicle. She expressed relief that the family escaped without injuries.

Federal authorities, including the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, have been contacted for additional information regarding Ramirez’s immigration history.
